Yep, the viscous rumors are true – the American River flows right through the middle of Sacramento’s urban sprawl. But, one trip down the river is all you’ll need to see that things are not what they seem. On the water, you’d swear you’re a million miles from civilization – beautiful stands of cottonwoods and oak whiz by as you drift through swift riffles and a handful of thrilling rapids. Deer, turkey, osprey, herons, egrets and waterfowl are sighted daily along the banks…not to mention the occasional bald eagle. A float through this country is definitely worth the trip!

And, oh yea, the fishing’s pretty darn good on the river, too. One of the best king salmon streams in the country, the American typically receives runs of 20,000 to 111,000 salmon each year in September, October and November. And since there’s only 20 miles of river to fish, the kings really get kegged up in spots – good news for those of us who like to catch them! Steelhead fishing on the American is also a delight. The scenery that time of year is tough to beat and chrome steelies to 18 pounds are the perfect antidote for the winter blues. When the winter runs tapers off in late February, the American gets invaded by a run of aggressive spring steelies that lasts well into April.
In May, a huge run of shad hits the river and they are followed by striped bass that can top the 40-pound mark. Both species are present until mid summer, at which point things finally settle down here for about a month and give anglers a much-needed rest.
